Coal City's Planned Unit Development Review Committee voted to advance Aligned Data Centers' proposal for an 11-building hyperscale campus to the village's Planning and Zoning Board. The project remains under review and will face a public hearing, with residents raising concerns about power-grid impacts, backup generators, traffic, water use and other environmental effects.

Coal City's Planned Unit Development Review Committee forwarded findings on Aligned Data Centers' proposed 11-building hyperscale campus to the village Planning and Zoning Board. The project would occupy 300 acres at Reed Road and Carbon Hill Road and include a dedicated ComEd substation; consultant HR Green concluded the proposal meets village development standards.

A public hearing is expected at the Planning and Zoning Board's December meeting, followed by consideration by the Village Board. If approved, construction could begin with substation work in early 2027, with the campus expected to reach full buildout by 2032. Residents have expressed concerns about electricity demand, extended use of backup generators during outages, traffic, water use and other potential impacts, while Coal City Trustee Pamela Noffsinger said the findings report will help officials continue evaluating the proposal.
