The Flint City Council committee has advanced a proposed 12-month moratorium on data center development to the full council. Council members cited the city's past water crisis as a reason for caution.

The Flint City Council committee has voted to send a proposed 12-month data center moratorium to the full council for consideration. The proposal aims to temporarily halt data center development in Flint, Michigan, by preventing the issuance of permits for a year while officials study potential environmental and infrastructure impacts.

Councilwoman Candice Mushatt emphasized the city's responsibility to its residents, citing the past water crisis as a key reason for caution regarding any development that could pose environmental risks. This move follows a similar action in Grand Blanc Township, which approved a yearlong pause in January to review information on data centers. Dr. Carolyn Loh of Wayne State University noted that moratoriums are common government tools when municipalities face an influx of new, large-scale developments.

During the pause, Flint council members intend to gather information on energy consumption, environmental concerns, and critically, water usage, given the city's sensitivity to water issues. Dr. Loh advocated for greater transparency from the data center industry regarding environmental impacts. The proposed moratorium also includes a review of zoning codes and ordinances by the Flint Planning and Development Department and legal counsel to establish future regulations. A city spokesperson confirmed that no companies have yet approached Flint about data center locations, indicating the resolution is a proactive step.
