Gov: Boone Town Council, Watauga County Commissioners
The Boone Town Council has unanimously passed a one-year moratorium on the construction of data centers and cryptocurrency mining operations within town limits. This decision, which drew nearly 100 residents in support, was driven by concerns about the potential strain on local infrastructure, depletion of water resources, and general environmental harm. Mayor Dalton George emphasized the town's proactive stance, aiming to implement robust regulations to prevent adverse impacts.
The idea for the moratorium was inspired by a similar measure approved in Canton, North Carolina, whose mayor views data centers and crypto technology as a threat to their community. Mayor George highlighted the environmental damage these operations can inflict and stressed the need for comprehensive ordinances.
Following the Boone Town Council's action, the Watauga County Commissioners have also agreed to hold a public hearing on April 21 to consider a county-wide moratorium on data center development, indicating a broader regional effort to address these concerns.
