Denver officials appointed a 26-member citizen and expert working group to develop policy recommendations on data center growth while a one-year moratorium is in effect. The move follows opposition to CoreSite's 600,000-square-foot data center in north Denver and signals that the moratorium could be extended beyond May.

Denver Mayor Mike Johnston and the Denver City Council announced a 26-member working group that will recommend rules for data center development during the city’s one-year moratorium. The panel includes neighborhood representatives, labor and utility officials, industry participants, environmental and air-quality experts, health professionals and academics, with meetings scheduled to begin Oct. 9.

The moratorium followed opposition from residents in the Elyria-Swansea and Globeville neighborhoods to CoreSite’s 600,000-square-foot data center under construction. Officials indicated the ban could be extended, while other Front Range communities, including Brighton and Weld County, are separately considering data center restrictions or facing opposition to large proposed projects.
