NorthWestern Energy has proposed a new tariff aimed at data centers in Montana, a move that has sparked widespread concern among various stakeholders regarding potential increases in electricity costs for existing customers. The proposal was filed with the Montana Public Service Commission (PSC) in March, seeking new terms for these "large new loads."

Numerous groups, including the City of Missoula, senior citizens, industrial customers, and the Butte Watchdogs for Social and Environmental Justice, have sought to intervene in the PSC case. Concerns range from the impact on fixed-income households and overall energy affordability to the lack of transparency in data center development. Governor Greg Gianforte, through the Department of Environmental Quality, has also expressed the state's intent to intervene, aiming to balance bringing high-paying jobs with preventing the subsidization of data centers by families. The Montana Consumer Counsel will also participate, representing consumer interests.

While NorthWestern Energy asserts its plan will protect existing customers and keep energy affordable, a conservation watchdog suggests the proposal grants the utility excessive control over data centers. The PSC's mandate is to ensure data center service does not adversely affect other customers in the long term, but a timeline for a hearing on the new tariff proposal remains unclear.
