Texas ag commissioner says Gov. Abbott’s data center crackdown ‘doesn’t put the brakes on anything’

Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently announced a directive requiring state regulators to audit every data center project before it can connect to the power grid. While some characterize this move as a moratorium on data centers in the state, Texas Agricultural Commissioner Sid Miller has voiced strong criticism, stating that the order "doesn't put the brakes on anything" and is merely "political speak." Miller contends that the audit is too vague and easily satisfied by developers, advocating instead for a special legislative session to enact more stringent regulations.

The controversy unfolds as a specific project, the proposed Palamino Alpha data center in Guadalupe County, faces ongoing opposition. Residents like Donnie Lim, who lives less than three miles from the proposed site, have expressed concerns over the project's potential impact on local water resources and utility infrastructure, noting already expensive water rates and usage restrictions. A coalition of residents and property owners has filed a lawsuit to block the project, questioning its approval process, which has currently put the project on hold.

Adding to the situation, Crystal Clear, the local water provider, is expected to vote soon on approving water allocations for the Palamino Alpha site. The project would also need to pass Governor Abbott's new state audit to connect to the grid, though the timeline for this audit remains unknown. Residents in Guadalupe County continue to monitor every development closely, with some, like Lim, suggesting the Governor's actions are driven more by re-election concerns than genuine restrictions on data center development.
