Gov: City of Niles, Weathersfield Township, Niles City Council
The City of Niles has declared it will take "no further action" on a proposed annexation request from Whitetail Creek LLC, known as Bitdeer, which sought to annex a portion of Weathersfield Township to facilitate a data center project. The city's decision stems from Bitdeer's failure to submit a formal annexation petition, zoning and permit plans, or a utility use application.
Following this, the City of Niles announced its intention to continue with a moratorium on future data center permitting. This pause is intended to allow the city to explore and establish specific data center zoning regulations. The city emphasized that this decision was made after carefully considering feedback and concerns from both Niles residents and those in neighboring communities.
Residents had previously vocalized worries to city officials regarding the potential strain a data center could place on local electricity and water resources. The city also noted that since the majority of Bitdeer's property remains within Weathersfield Township, any concerns related to zoning and land use for that portion should be directed to Weathersfield officials.
