Emporia Planning Commission moves forward with data center zoning recommendation
The Emporia Planning Commission voted 6-1 to approve a recommendation for a Digital Infrastructure Overlay District to the full City Commission. This recommendation involves rezoning 11 different locations for a potential data center, sparking discussions and mixed opinions among residents and board members regarding economic expansion versus proximity to schools and residential districts.
The Emporia Planning Commission has advanced its zoning recommendations for a proposed Digital Infrastructure Overlay District, which includes 11 potential data center locations. Following a discussion on Tuesday night, the commission voted 6-1 to approve its recommendation to the full City Commission.
The meeting, though not as heavily attended as previous sessions, saw significant public engagement. Justin Givens, Emporia City Liaison, clarified that the purpose was to deliberate and recommend based on findings of fact for the rezoning request. The commission's recommendation included approving some tracts for rezoning while denying others.
Opinions among board members and residents were divided. Denise Gilligan, a Planning Commission and Board of Zoning Appeals member, expressed discomfort with rezoning at this time due to proximity to schools and residential areas. Conversely, Vice Chair Stan Fowler emphasized the need for designated areas for business expansion. The debate comes as Emporia seeks economic growth following the departures of companies like Tyson and Michelin.
