Nelson's comments come amidst plans for over 50 data centers in the Central Texas region. Tech giants like Google and AI startup Anthropic have announced significant investments in Texas data centers. Google committed $40 billion for three massive AI data centers, while Anthropic plans to invest $50 billion in data centers in New York and Texas, with operations expected to begin this year.
In response to the growing data center development, Texas Governor Greg Abbott previously stated that companies establishing data centers in the state must be self-sufficient regarding energy and water. He indicated that these facilities are required to bring their own power and implement water reuse strategies. Nelson further elaborated on his concerns, highlighting the importance of thoughtful stewardship of land and natural resources, particularly in relation to farmland and small family farmers' livelihoods.
