The Socorro County Commission has authorized the publication of an ordinance summary to establish a moratorium on data centers in unincorporated county regions. The Socorro County Commission took its first official step towards implementing a moratorium on data centers within the county's unincorporated areas during its May 12 regular meeting. The commission authorized the publication of an ordinance summary and title, a necessary legal precursor under New Mexico law for establishing such a ban. The meeting saw significant public engagement, with over 130 individuals attending and more than 20 public commenters offering testimony specifically addressing the proposed Green Data project. Socorro County Attorney Adren Nance clarified the legal process, stating that the ordinance must undergo a two-week publication period, followed by a public hearing, before a vote can take place. A vote on the proposed moratorium is expected to be a key item on the agenda for the County Commission's regular meeting scheduled for June 9. Concurrently, New Mexico Tech is slated to host its first town hall meeting regarding the Green Data Center proposal on May 19, where Jason Bak, CEO of Green Data, is anticipated to be present.
