County Commissioner Shane Eaton, a sponsor of the resolution, stated that the initiative directly addresses citizen concerns regarding property values and utility rates. He emphasized the need for transparency and a thorough understanding of all potential impacts before data center projects proceed. The proposed committee would examine existing zoning regulations, other land use planning tools, and the optimal locations for industrial development within the county.
Additionally, the committee would research the effects of data centers on crucial local resources, including water, the electrical grid, and first responder services, as well as public infrastructure like roads and the environment. Eaton clarified that the goal is not to halt progress but to ensure that data center development is strategically integrated to benefit the county and protect residential areas and farms. The committee's findings would be presented to county leaders before the moratorium's expiration, with the next County Commission meeting scheduled for July 28.
