Columbia County Google data center to be one of largest in the country

A new Google data center is set to be constructed in Columbia County, Georgia, across the White Oak and Pumpkin Center sites, making it one of the largest in the United States. Columbia County Manager Scott Johnson confirmed the project, which has been under consideration for over a year and represents a significant investment by Google.

Johnson noted that the county engaged in extensive research, including visiting Loudoun County, Virginia, known as a major data center hub, to learn from their experiences and avoid similar pitfalls. This led to the adoption of what Johnson describes as some of the country's strictest environmental guidelines for data centers, particularly addressing concerns about water consumption.

Hundreds of local taxpayers had previously voiced concerns about environmental impact and quality of life at commission meetings. Despite public opposition, the county has moved forward with the project, with commissioners showing support for Google's development approach. Google declined to comment directly but issued a statement expressing optimism about growing in Georgia and partnering for economic growth in Columbia County and across the state.

Johnson projects that the data center's income could eventually be used to eliminate property taxes for Columbia County residents, providing a tax credit on their bills. He believes the long-term benefits of the project, including putting Columbia County "on the map" with its strategic financial plan, will outweigh any potential negatives.
