The Taylor County Commission conducted a data center workshop following community concerns raised at a previous meeting. Professors from Florida State University, researchers from the University of Florida, and James Taylor, CEO of the Florida Technology Council, addressed the commission.
Experts discussed the pros and cons of data centers, addressing common concerns such as water usage and noise. James Taylor emphasized that proper planning and community engagement could lead to economic development without sacrificing community interests. However, many residents still felt more action was needed.
Taylor County resident Santina Deming urged the commission to implement a moratorium at their next meeting, arguing it would provide time to bring in more experts, study impacts, and establish clear requirements before any proposals emerge. Another resident, Joy Ezell, expressed hope that commissioners would align with residents' opposition to data centers.
Although no action was taken, some commissioners showed interest in a moratorium, while others requested more time. Commission Chairman Jamie English indicated that placing a moratorium on a future agenda would be a next step, acknowledging the current lack of protections. Commissioners confirmed that no active data center projects are currently pending in Taylor County.
