Townsite Solar 2, LLC has withdrawn its application to convert city-owned land in Boulder City, Nevada, from a solar farm to a data center. This decision follows public pushback and a Planning Commission recommendation against data centers without more rules. The City Council will continue discussions on data center regulations, while a federal agency approved a similar data center plan for TS2 on adjacent federal land.

Boulder City, Nevada, will conclude its formal review process regarding a proposed data center on city-owned land after developer Townsite Solar 2, LLC (TS2) withdrew its application. TS2 initially sought to amend its existing option to lease 88.5 acres from the city, converting a planned solar farm and battery storage project into a data center. The city required TS2 to initiate the Land Management Process, which includes public input, for the new lease.

This withdrawal follows a strong recommendation from the Boulder City Planning Commission in May, which voted 6-1 against incorporating data centers into the Land Management Process without establishing more comprehensive rules and oversight. Public pushback also played a role in the developer's decision to pull the plan.

Despite the withdrawal of TS2's city application, the Boulder City Council is still scheduled to discuss data centers at its July 14 meeting, including the Planning Commission's recommendation for further regulation. Separately, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) on June 26 approved TS2's request to amend a federal right-of-way to permit a data center on an adjacent 80-acre federal parcel, a decision currently subject to a 30-day appeal period. City officials previously estimated a data center lease could generate significant annual revenue for Boulder City.
