Data center development has emerged as a contentious issue in the current Texas election cycle, drawing significant attention from candidates across the political spectrum. Nate Sheets, a Republican candidate for Texas agriculture commissioner, expressed "alarming concern" about data centers, advocating for smart development that also maintains national security competitiveness.
Conversely, Democratic candidate for agriculture commissioner Clayton Tucker has proposed a moratorium on new data center construction, citing their high water consumption and poor siting. Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico criticizes the lack of public-private partnerships, demanding data centers bear the full cost of their energy and infrastructure needs, and create union jobs. His opponent, Attorney General Ken Paxton, has not publicly commented on the issue.
State Representative Vikki Goodwin, D-Austin, running against Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, also seeks a pause on data center construction until new regulatory bills can be enacted. While Patrick has not taken a definitive stance, he has directed senators to study data center growth frameworks and sales tax exemptions. Governor Greg Abbott has already put forth suggested regulations, which are expected to be addressed by lawmakers in the upcoming legislative session.
