Salix moves to dismiss annexation lawsuit as data center moratorium fails

Salix, Iowa is seeing new developments in the push to construct a large data center, with city officials working to resolve legal and regulatory obstacles. The Salix City Attorney recently filed a motion to dismiss a lawsuit that aims to prevent the city's annexation of a 900-acre farmland site designated for the project.

Simultaneously, the Salix City Council failed to pass a data center moratorium during its latest meeting. If approved, the moratorium would have halted all communication with Google, which is actively considering developing a data center on the site. Confusion arose among council members regarding a previous vote, with Councilmember Gene Monk believing a one-year moratorium had already been enacted in July. Google representatives also appeared to operate under this assumption, citing a lack of a municipal data center ordinance as a current impediment.

Despite the confusion and initial beliefs, Thursday's vote ensures that open dialogue between Salix and Google can proceed. Councilmember Denise Burkhart, who voted against the moratorium, emphasized the importance of maintaining communication at this early stage. Following the decision, a Google spokesperson expressed gratitude for the council's choice to allow public discussions to move forward, reiterating Google's commitment to transparent engagement with Salix residents. Both local officials and residents anticipate a lengthy development process ahead.
