Cass County, Nebraska, is grappling with a potential moratorium on data center development, driven by escalating concerns from residents regarding environmental impacts and the preservation of farmland. The Cass County Planning Commission is currently weighing the proposed moratorium, with a key meeting scheduled at the Cass County Fairgrounds.

Local farmer Jayden Speed, who leads the "Cass County Data Center Watch" group, is a vocal proponent of pausing new data center regulations. Speed, along with colleague Edison McDonald, emphasizes the need to protect the region's natural resources and agricultural land from what they describe as an "explosion" of hyperscale data centers requiring thousands of acres.

The debate comes as neighboring counties in southeastern Nebraska, including Otoe, Gage, and Seward, have already enacted data center moratoriums. Reports from the Flatwater Free Press in March indicated that Tenaska had optioned 2,000 acres in Cass County for a large generating station intended to power an adjacent data center.

Cass County Commissioner Duane Murdoch acknowledged the gravity of the decision, noting the temporary job benefits during construction but expressing significant concerns about long-term water usage. The Planning Commission will ultimately recommend a course of action to the Cass County Board of Commissioners, which holds the final authority on data center regulations.
