Whitmer says Delhi Township data center project will have to win local support
A proposed 700-megawatt data center on a 423-acre site in Delhi Township would require local support before moving forward. Township trustees are considering a resolution opposing data centers, while Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said the project must protect water resources and avoid shifting energy costs to ratepayers.
A proposed data center development near College Road in Delhi Township is drawing local opposition after the Lansing Economic Area Partnership announced a partnership with Lighthouse Sustainability to explore the project. The concept would include 700 megawatts of capacity, six hours of battery storage, closed-loop cooling and about 90 acres of preserved nature, with an estimated investment of $10 billion.
The Delhi Township Board of Trustees scheduled a special meeting to consider a resolution opposing data centers and has withdrawn from the Lansing Economic Area Partnership. The project cannot be formally proposed until at least next spring because of a local moratorium. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she had not closely studied the proposal but emphasized that any development would need community support, protect water supplies and avoid imposing additional energy costs on residents.
