The rapid proliferation of data centers across Central Texas is creating significant strain on the state's power grid, leading to concerns among residents about grid stability and potential spikes in electricity prices. Analysts project that AI data centers could account for approximately half of Texas's increased power demand over the next six years. In response to these challenges, industry figures are exploring technological solutions. At the EarthX 2026 conference in Dallas, Nick Davis, CEO of SMR Defense, advocated for the deployment of autonomous robots and artificial intelligence to bolster the security and maintenance of the power infrastructure. He demonstrated AI-enabled machines, including drones and a quadruped robot, arguing that these technologies are crucial for monitoring and defending a decentralized grid, which is becoming too vast for human patrols alone. Davis highlighted the benefits of autonomous fleets in detecting anomalies, performing repairs, and generating continuous data on infrastructure health. However, his views on technology as a primary solution may face skepticism, especially given warnings that data center-induced demand could push average electricity rates significantly higher. Adding another perspective, Texas Railroad Commissioner Wayne Christian, speaking at the same conference, countered that government regulation, rather than technological limitations, is the chief impediment to adequately meeting the escalating energy demand. Christian emphasized the immediate need to secure affordable electricity for Texans, while acknowledging the importance of protecting the grid from external threats.
