The Joliet City Council recently approved a proposal for the Joliet Technology Center, a massive 795-acre data center development that could become the largest in Illinois. This decision followed months of intense debate and public hearings, during which hundreds of residents urged the council to reject the plan. Despite the opposition, the council voted in favor, with only one member dissenting, seeing the project as a significant economic opportunity for the city and local skilled tradespeople. Doc Gregory, president of the Will Grundy Building Trades Council, lauded the approval, anticipating 8,600 construction jobs over five years and 700 permanent, high-paying positions. He also highlighted the projected $2.4 billion in taxes for the City of Joliet and a $100 million contribution from "Hillwood powerhouse" for city infrastructure upgrades. Mayor Terry D'Arcy and City Manager Beth Beatty echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the project's clear expectations for infrastructure and services, substantial new revenue, and long-term financial benefits for the community.
