A new AI data center proposed for a large industrial property at 1215 Michigan Street on San Francisco's central waterfront is facing significant opposition. The Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) has launched a petition campaign, actively collecting signatures to urge city leaders to prevent the data center's development.
Simultaneously, San Francisco city officials are considering a 45-day moratorium on new data centers. This proposed ordinance, supported by City Supervisor Shamann Walton, whose district includes the project area, aims to provide time to study the long-term impacts of such facilities on the city. Story Park Capital had listed the "NPC Flagship Data Center, San Francisco" as in development on its website, though current owner Our Peace Tagging Company LLC has not yet filed official plans with the city.
Residents and activists, including PSL volunteer Clear Law, express concerns that working people would bear the costs through higher electricity bills and contaminated water. A poll by the Public Policy Institute of California indicated that 73% of adult Californians, across both Democratic and Republican affiliations, oppose the construction of data centers in their communities. The PSL group is also organizing a community meeting to further mobilize opposition.
