The Lake County Plan Commission has deferred a crucial vote on a proposed data center project near Lowell, Indiana, opting to wait until its May 20 meeting. The unanimous decision, made during a recent meeting, aims to facilitate a public forum concerning the development, scheduled for April 16 at Lowell High School. This comes after Plan Commission Director Ned Kovachevich informed the board of numerous emails from residents expressing concern that a decision might be made prior to public input. The project, initially presented to the commission in December, involves Sentinel Data Centers, a New York-based company, proposing to construct a data center on 160 acres in Eagle Creek Township. The development would necessitate a zone change from A1 agriculture to M1 light industrial. Lake County Councilman Randy Niemeyer, who also serves on the plan commission, motioned for the postponement, emphasizing the importance of transparency in the process. Project officials, including Andy Qunell of VRQ LLC, have previously highlighted the potential for a $5 billion investment, creating over 2,500 construction jobs and expanding the county's tax base.
