Texas Governor Greg Abbott has taken decisive action to slow the rapid expansion of data centers within the state. On Monday, Governor Abbott issued a directive ordering a state environmental regulator to temporarily halt the issuance of new permits for data centers.
This pause is mandated to continue until the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) concludes an audit of all data centers currently awaiting approval to connect to the state's power grid. Regulators aim to finalize this audit by December.
The Governor's move signals a shift in his stance, as he had previously been a proponent of data center development in Texas. The policy change is attributed to increasing bipartisan political opposition to the artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout and a competitive reelection campaign.
