Amazon to invest $1 billion in data center communities
Amazon announced more than $1 billion in community investments intended to offset the impacts of its expanding data center network. The funding will support energy affordability, sustainable water supplies, education, future hiring and local partnerships, while Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman defended the company’s AI infrastructure expansion against concerns about water use and electricity rates.
Amazon said it will invest more than $1 billion in communities affected by its rapid data center buildout. The company plans to use the money to improve energy affordability, support sustainable water supplies, fund education and workforce development, and partner with existing local organizations.
In a 12-page memo, Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman defended the company’s push to expand AI infrastructure and argued that some criticism of data centers’ effects on water use and energy rates is misleading. The announcement was reported by KIRO 7 News, which serves the Seattle, Tacoma, Everett and wider Western Washington region, but the video did not identify a specific project location.
