Texas Governor Greg Abbott recently issued a directive mandating that all data centers awaiting connection to the state's power grid must undergo an audit by state authorities. The directive, sent to the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUC) and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), requires data centers to disclose comprehensive information regarding their electricity and water consumption.
To comply with the audit, data centers must specify whether they will use their own power or draw from the grid, detail their estimated water consumption and anticipated water supply, and clarify if they are implementing water reuse practices. Additionally, the facilities are required to provide information on noise mitigation measures and disclose their ownership details.
According to Governor Abbott's directive, any data center project that fails to meet these new requirements set forth by the PUC or ERCOT will be denied access to the state's power grid. The move aims to ensure greater transparency and oversight of the growing data center industry's impact on Texas's critical resources.
