Forsyth Township tackles K.I. Sawyer data center concerns and potential military return at town hall

Forsyth Township hosted a town hall meeting to address community concerns regarding potential data center developments at the K.I. Sawyer area. The township council had previously approved a 12-month moratorium on these projects, a measure designed to give leaders time for comprehensive research and planning. Interim Township Manager Ray Anderson noted that a prior township council meeting drew a packed house, where residents voiced demands for answers about data center developments.

Anderson explained that the three-minute speaking windows at previous meetings were insufficient for a real conversation. The town hall aimed to facilitate thorough listening to community concerns and to investigate and implement solutions that benefit the community. Michigan law prevents communities from outright banning certain developments, making the year-long moratorium crucial for the township to research and establish proper zoning protections.

The township plans to study the approaches of neighboring communities, such as Negaunee, to inform its own policy. Top concerns highlighted by Anderson include noise, energy, and water issues associated with data centers. The town hall also covered the potential return of military activity to K.I. Sawyer, a decision ultimately resting with Marquette County. Forsyth Township invited county representatives and plans to record and share the meeting's feedback with county officials.
