Coffee County could be next in Tenn. to establish restrictions on data centers
Coffee County, Tennessee is poised to vote on a one-year data center moratorium to restrict new builds across all zoning districts. The proposed resolution aims to allow the Planning Commission time to review and potentially amend the county's zoning language. Coffee County Mayor Dennis Hunt noted that while data centers cannot be banned, restrictions can be implemented.
The Coffee County Commission in Tennessee is scheduled to vote on a resolution for a one-year moratorium on data center construction across all county zoning districts. The vote is set for Tuesday evening.
Coffee County Mayor Dennis Hunt stated in a social media video that the moratorium would provide the Planning Commission with an opportunity to examine and potentially amend the county's existing zoning language. He indicated that current A1 Agricultural District zoning might permit data centers due to its allowance for utility facilities.
Hunt also expressed concern that outright bans on data centers by other counties or cities could lead to legal challenges, emphasizing that while data centers are legal, the county can implement restrictions to make development undesirable within its zoning framework.
If approved, the moratorium would take effect immediately.
