‘Community Conversation’ held on massive $15B data center campus in Port Washington

A "Community Conversation" event was held in Port Washington, Wisconsin, to discuss a massive $15 billion data center campus being developed by Vantage Data Centers in partnership with Oracle and OpenAI. The event aimed to provide information and address local residents' concerns regarding the project's environmental impact, water and energy consumption, and construction-related issues like noise and light pollution. Attendees like Christina Pattengale, a data analyst, sought answers on these impacts, while others, such as Port Washington resident Joy Hayward, left disappointed, feeling their questions about water usage, noise, and power line placement were largely unaddressed.

Misty Allen, Vice President of Public Policy North America for Vantage Data Centers, acknowledged community concerns and stated the event was to ensure residents understood the changes happening in their area. The campus, dubbed "Lighthouse," is a 672-acre development near Interstate 43, expected to be operational around 2028 and create 1,000 permanent jobs. A significant development for the project is the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin's recent revocation of a "completeness" determination for a crucial transmission line project. Despite ongoing community opposition and complaints about construction disruptions, some residents, like Jim Jarosz, support the project for its potential economic benefits. Vantage Data Centers plans to plant over 2,000 trees and install an 8-foot berm at the site.
