The Shelbyville Common Council convened last night, dedicating significant time to public comment regarding a proposed data center development by Prologis. The meeting, which was rescheduled from the previous week due to spring break, addressed administrative matters before turning to resident input.
Connie Lindsay, a concerned resident, questioned the timing of the proposed data center ordinance, seeking assurances of protections before an upcoming April 6 annexation vote. She urged city officials to obtain legal counsel to implement adequate safeguards and presented a petition advocating for a moratorium on data center development. Mayor Scott Furgeson acknowledged these concerns, stating that officials and legal counsel are actively developing a comprehensive development agreement tied to the annexation, which is expected to be publicly shared soon.
Another resident, Gina Jackson, raised inquiries about the financial implications of the project and requested guarantees for nearby property owners. Council member Betsy Means Davis, who introduced the ordinance overlay, highlighted existing protections within current ordinances while also emphasizing the need for additional guidelines, such as setbacks and visual buffers. The council, however, did not take any formal action on the public comments during the session.
