Opinion: Project Jupiter can strengthen southern New Mexico while advancing U.S. AI

Project Jupiter, a significant data center development in Doña Ana County, New Mexico, is now more than 25% complete, with the final structural beam placed on its 855,000-square-foot first portion. The project is a collaboration between Clayco and Kiewit New Mexico Co., with participation from Oracle and STACK Infrastructure, and involves extensive local and union labor.

Bob Clark, executive chairman and founder of Clayco, highlights the project's role in advancing U.S. artificial intelligence leadership by providing essential infrastructure. He emphasizes the substantial economic benefits for southern New Mexico and Doña Ana County, including billions of dollars in long-term impact and the creation of over 7,000 construction jobs and 1,500 ongoing project-supported jobs, with a focus on local hiring and workforce development.

The project is designed with a strong commitment to environmental responsibility and transparency. It incorporates efficient, low-emissions power and minimal water use, utilizing closed-loop, non-evaporative cooling systems that do not rely on community drinking water. Project Jupiter also plans to launch a public dashboard to share real-time environmental performance data on noise, water use, heat, light, and emissions. Beyond the physical infrastructure, the initiative supports local water systems, schools, infrastructure, and community organizations, aiming to strengthen the region.
