Tallahassee commissioners recently engaged in a debate over potential restrictions on data center development within the city. Commissioner Jeremy Matlow proposed implementing a one-year moratorium on data center construction. However, City Manager Reese Goad informed the commission that, even if desired, the city currently lacks the capacity to support a data center. Goad highlighted that current land use ordinances and the city's comprehensive plan do not permit data centers to exist in Tallahassee today. Furthermore, he emphasized that the city's utility infrastructure would require tripling in size to adequately support such facilities.
