Martindale Brightwood data center set to move forward
A proposed data center in Indianapolis's Martindale Brightwood area received rezoning approval from the Metropolitan Development Commission despite neighbor objections regarding noise, lights, and height. The developer, Metro Blocks, has committed to mitigating these concerns and investing in the community.
The Metropolitan Development Commission (MDC) has approved the rezoning for a proposed quarter-billion-dollar data center in Indianapolis's Martindale Brightwood area, moving the project forward despite strong opposition from local residents. The developer, Metro Blocks, plans to build two data center buildings, 70 feet high—nearly double the permitted zoning height—on nearly 14 acres of mostly vacant land at 25th and Sherman.
Neighbors voiced concerns about potential noise from three dozen generators and light spillover, which they feared would disturb their sleep. Metro Blocks has committed to mitigating these impacts by dampening noise and limiting light spillover, as well as providing a park and green space. Furthermore, the developer pledged to spend $20 million on affordable housing and other community needs in Martindale Brightwood, especially if they secure tax abatements. While few jobs are expected once the center is operational, Metro Blocks suggested local workers could be hired and trained for employment.
