Charlotte officials discuss extending data center moratorium during District 5 town hall
Charlotte officials are considering extending a moratorium on new data center developments beyond its November 5 expiration. This potential nine-month extension is being discussed following community concerns about environmental impacts, resource use, and equitable development. The initial moratorium was implemented in response to public outcry over these issues.
Charlotte City Council is debating whether to extend a 150-day moratorium on new data center developments, which is currently set to expire on November 5. Councilmember JD Mazuera Arias highlighted the discussion during his District 5 town hall, emphasizing the importance of resident input on such significant decisions. Residents, including Nancy Lescailles, expressed their approval of a potential extension, citing various concerns regarding the impact of data centers on their communities.
The proposed extension would prolong the development pause by an additional nine months. David Hittle, an official with the Charlotte Planning, Design and Development, indicated that substantial work remains to be done in establishing clear guidelines for data centers. He suggested that additional legislative sessions would be beneficial for the state to amend, repeal, or fine-tune related laws.
The initial moratorium was enacted on June 8, preventing new applications for data center developments that had not yet received approval. This measure was a direct response to widespread public concerns regarding potential issues such as excessive water usage, strain on the power grid, noise pollution, and the equitable placement of these facilities across different income communities.
