A new poll in California reveals strong statewide opposition to the construction of AI data centers, with majorities across demographics expressing distaste for such projects. The survey also shows broad support for environmental protection efforts and a ballot proposition to streamline infrastructure development, alongside concerns about rising energy costs. Gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra holds a commanding lead in the governor's race.

A recent poll by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) indicates widespread voter sentiment across California, highlighting strong opposition to new data centers for artificial intelligence technology. The survey found that 44% of adults strongly oppose and 29% somewhat oppose such projects, with consistent resistance across various demographics and regions, including the Inland Empire where a large data center project was previously halted due to community pushback.

The poll also addressed environmental policies and the upcoming gubernatorial race. Democrat Xavier Becerra leads Republican Steve Hilton by a significant margin (61% to 36%) in the contest to replace Governor Gavin Newsom. Voters showed strong support for Proposition 45, a ballot measure designed to reform the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) to accelerate housing and infrastructure development by shortening review periods.

While a majority of Californians support state efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment, many are unwilling to pay more for renewable energy, citing concerns about rising energy costs. Governor Newsom's 2035 ban on new gas-powered vehicle sales also faces substantial opposition. The PPIC poll surveyed 1,578 California adults between June 29 and July 6.
