In an installment of WKMS's "Cyber Bytes" series, Tracy Ross and Dr. Michael Ramage, director of Murray State's Cyber Education and Research Center, discussed the ongoing local debate surrounding a new AI data center campus planned for Paducah, Kentucky. This discussion follows a late July 2026 announcement of a partnership between the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Brookfield, NextEra Energy, Big Rivers Electric Power Corporation, Jackson Purchase Energy Cooperative, and Paducah Power System to develop the data center on a portion of the former DOE Paducah Site.

Dr. Ramage, a cybersecurity educator, addressed several key concerns raised about AI data centers, including their potential impact on local power grids. He stated that based on information from a press conference, the Western Kentucky region would experience minimal, if any, negative impact, suggesting a potential positive effect through a White House-outlined power-back initiative. He also tackled environmental worries such as water and soil pollution, noting the project's location on the Ohio River for water supply and the use of closed-loop systems to reduce consumption. Regarding potential soil pollution, he mentioned the use of concrete slabs.

Ramage expressed a strong opinion that the DOE site, due to its history of uranium enrichment, is uniquely well-suited for a data center, as it is already equipped to handle environmental considerations. He further argued that the distance from residential areas would mitigate noise pollution. Additionally, he highlighted the economic benefits, specifically mentioning that property taxes generated by the data center could provide significant additional funding for public schools across the state.
