Power expansion initiatives linked to Google's expanding data center operations in Monrovia, Indiana, are encountering pushback from both ratepayer advocates and landowners. AES Indiana has committed approximately $1.3 billion for three new projects and upgrades to support Google's 390-megawatt data center.
Ratepayer advocates, including the Citizens Action Coalition, argue that Google should be responsible for the full cost of a proposed $73.8 million transmission line, referencing utilities' Ratepayer Protection Pledge. AES Indiana counters that the line is necessary for the broader electric grid to meet growing demand from various customer segments. Over three dozen landowners have attended regulatory hearings to voice opposition to potential transmission line routes crossing their properties. Many have retained legal counsel, citing eminent domain concerns and indicating their intent to challenge land acquisition efforts if their farms are affected. The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission has allowed landowners to participate in the proceedings, though it will not determine the final route.
