Candidates in Santa Clara’s District 2 and District 3 City Council races addressed data centers, infrastructure, budget policy and the city’s relationship with the 49ers during a Sept. 27 forum. The discussion produced few major policy differences, with candidates varying more in the specificity of their proposals.

Planning Commission Chair Eric Crutchlow said he favors a data center moratorium and proposed beginning with a report examining the cumulative effects of data centers and other local industries if their diesel generators operate simultaneously. He questioned whether that activity could create a public-health problem. Candidate Yvonne Inciarte suggested educating residents about data centers and using sliding electric rates, while the other candidates did not offer detailed data center policies.
