Vantage North America President Dana Adams offered a guided tour of one of the company's existing data centers in Sterling, Virginia, aiming to demystify data center operations for the public. This initiative comes amidst increasing debate and opposition surrounding Vantage's proposed hyperscale AI facility, codenamed Lighthouse, in Port Washington, Wisconsin. While the Virginia facility is smaller, it provided insights into the security, server infrastructure, and elaborate cooling systems characteristic of modern data centers.
The Port Washington project, expected to involve a $15 billion investment, is anticipated to create 1,000 on-site jobs, including employees from Vantage and its customers, Oracle and OpenAI. Ryan Kehoe, Vantage's vice president of site operations, highlighted the facility's closed-loop water cooling system, which will use an initial fill of 11.8 million gallons of water that is then recycled.
However, environmental groups have voiced concerns regarding the indirect water demands associated with the high energy consumption of data centers. Adams acknowledged the growing opposition in Wisconsin and emphasized Vantage's commitment to responsible development, noting that construction is progressing well, with the second building on campus having recently topped out. She also expressed the company's interest in further expansion within Wisconsin, citing the state's potential to be a key player in technological growth.
