Baltimore County residents weigh in on potential data centers at public hearing
Baltimore County held a public hearing where residents debated the future of data centers after a one-year moratorium was enacted. Speakers voiced both economic support and environmental and community concerns. The Planning Board is set to provide recommendations to the County Council by October 1.
Baltimore County residents attended a public hearing to discuss the future of data centers in the region, following the County Council's unanimous approval of a one-year moratorium in February. The Planning Board is currently studying the potential impacts of data centers and is tasked with submitting recommendations to the council by October 1.
During the meeting, over 50 speakers expressed both support for the economic benefits data centers could bring and strong opposition due to environmental concerns and potential community sacrifice. Demonstrators also rallied outside the County Council Chambers against data center development.
Similar debates are occurring in nearby counties. Harford County's council recently advanced emergency legislation to ban data centers outright, with County Executive Bob Cassilly expressing clear opposition. Howard County's council also introduced a bill this week to pause data center development, indicating a regional trend of caution regarding these facilities.
