The Ascension Parish Council recently approved a resolution to establish comprehensive regulations for data centers, despite there being no immediate plans for such facilities in the parish. During the August 6 meeting in Donaldsonville, Council Chair Chase Melancon clarified that the initiative is a proactive measure to address concerns about potential high-impact developments and the current absence of specific guidelines regarding setbacks, noise, and proper zoning.
Several individuals voiced opposition to data centers during the public comment period, underscoring community apprehension. Council member Blaine Petite emphasized that the ordinance aims to get ahead of potential developments by setting clear rules for any future data center applicants. Council member Joel Robert also suggested implementing a moratorium until these regulations are finalized, though the council's immediate action was to approve the resolution to create the ordinance.
Parish President Clint Cointment also delivered a report on various parish activities, including congratulating the Little League 12U team and highlighting successful back-to-school events. He also mentioned the ribbon-cutting for a new airnasium at the South Louisiana Fairgrounds and the hiring of Tamiko Stroud by Hyundai Louisiana Steel, which is beginning pre-construction work on a new steel mill in the Modeste area.
