The group No AI in KY held a walkout outside the Lexington Government Center to oppose artificial intelligence and data center development. The Lexington council recently approved a one-year moratorium on new data centers and plans to consider zoning changes governing where and how they can be built.

Members of No AI in KY gathered outside the Lexington Government Center for a nationally organized walkout opposing artificial intelligence and data centers. Organizers said the effort reflects concerns about the effects of AI on communities, workers and the arts, while calling for greater public scrutiny of the technology’s consequences.

Reeva Russell English, a member of the group, said Lexington leaders approved a one-year moratorium on new data centers earlier in October but that the group’s campaign is continuing. She said officials are expected to strengthen the zoning ordinance and consider text amendments governing where and how data centers can be built.

University of Kentucky students and graduate students also spoke at the event, expressing concern that AI could affect future employment and creative industries. One graduate student argued that AI can mimic human creativity by using human work, and said he is opposing both AI and data centers to protect the future of the community.
