Residents of Tulsa, Oklahoma, gathered at Dreamkeeper Park to express opposition against "Project Anthem," a data center currently under construction in East Tulsa near East 11th Street and South 193rd Avenue. The rally aimed to inform the community about an upcoming city council vote on a proposed moratorium that would temporarily halt new data center developments for approximately one year.
One rally organizer voiced concerns regarding the data center's impact on water and energy resources, as well as its effects on local job development and surrounding neighborhoods. Another attendee, Kelsey Cooper, shared her experience with similar issues in nearby Bixby and emphasized that data centers negatively affect the environment, economy, and communities, urging Oklahomans to unite against them.
While city councilors had previously voted in February to re-evaluate the city's zoning code for data centers, the proposed moratorium specifically targets future projects and would not impact Project Anthem, which is already underway. The vote on the moratorium is scheduled for the following day, as city councilors consider preventing new data centers from being approved under current rules and classifications.
