Oregon's Public Utility Commission has voted to implement new electricity rates, increasing costs for data centers in Portland General Electric territory by 29%. This change, championed by Representative Pam Marsh's Power Act, aims to provide relief to residential, commercial, and industrial customers. The new rates will go into effect on July 8th.
The Oregon Public Utility Commission has voted to implement new electricity rates for data centers and other customers. This decision, stemming from Representative Pam Marsh's Power Act, will see data centers located within Portland General Electric's service territory pay 29% more for electricity.
Conversely, residential, commercial, and industrial customers in the same territory are expected to see a decrease in their rates. Representative Marsh stated that the aim is to ensure data centers cover all costs associated with their service, including system expansion and energy, without burdening other ratepayers.
The rate changes are scheduled to take effect on July 8th. Pacific Power is also expected to discuss its own data center rates later this year, potentially leading to similar rate adjustments for its customers.
