Charlotte City Council Extends Data Center Moratorium for 11 Months
Charlotte City Council approved an 11-month extension of the city’s moratorium on new data center construction. The pause does not affect previously approved projects, while city staff use the extension to develop regulations and council members seek greater state authority over zoning changes.
The Charlotte City Council approved an 11-month extension of its moratorium on new data center construction, extending the earliest date for consideration of new projects to October of the following year. Projects approved before the original 150-day moratorium took effect are exempt from the pause.
City staff said the additional time is needed to develop data center regulations. Some council members also hope the North Carolina state government will grant the city more authority to downzone areas during the extended moratorium.
