Wrangell Borough Assembly votes NO on data center proposal
The Wrangell Borough Assembly unanimously rejected a land lease proposal for a privately run data center by Greensparc. This decision was based on a recommendation to retain the waterfront property for maritime industry expansion and followed significant public opposition regarding power consumption and environmental concerns.
The Wrangell Borough Assembly unanimously voted down a proposed land lease for a privately run data center, following Borough Manager Mason Villarma's recommendation to preserve the waterfront property for future maritime industry expansion. The assembly's decision, made on June 9, means the 10,000-square-foot facility proposed by Greensparc will not be built at the 6-Mile Mill deepwater port site.
Greensparc, which had previously established a smaller data center in Cordova, Alaska, faced considerable public opposition in Wrangell. Residents voiced concerns about potential power consumption and environmental issues both on social media and at an assembly meeting. Manager Villarma emphasized the strategic value of the 6-Mile site for maritime uses, citing its deepwater access, upland acreage, and proximity to marine operations.
