5C Group filed a $575 million permit to upgrade its Memphis data center and quadruple its power capacity from 20 to 84 megawatts. The Canada-based company plans to use hydrogen-powered fuel cell technology rather than draw additional power from the Memphis Light, Gas and Water grid.

5C Group plans to expand the data center it is developing at the former Fred’s Inc. headquarters in Memphis, according to company officials. The Canada-based artificial intelligence infrastructure provider filed a $575 million permit on Oct. 6 for upgrades expected to increase the facility’s power capacity from 20 to 84 megawatts within six months.

Chief Revenue Officer Brad Nimri said the expanded capacity will be supplied by hydrogen-powered fuel cell technology and will not rely on the Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division’s grid. The additional power would allow 5C Group to lease more capacity to data center customers and increase revenue.
