Santa Clara wants better water, air standards for data centers
Santa Clara officials unanimously approved a plan to prioritize new water and air quality standards for data centers. The city postponed consideration of a proposed moratorium while staff conduct a broader review of data center impacts, siting and community benefits.
The Santa Clara City Council on Oct. 6 unanimously directed city staff to prioritize water and air quality standards for data centers. The action is part of a broader review of the city’s data center policies, including health and safety impacts, siting and community benefits.
Officials stopped short of considering a moratorium on new data center projects in the development pipeline. The comprehensive policy review was previously expected to conclude by the end of 2027, but the city said water and air standards could be developed sooner.
