Compass Datacenters is facing a setback in Shawnee County. Here's why
Compass Datacenters' Conditional Use Permit application for a data center in Shawnee County was declared incomplete. This setback follows the Topeka City Council's recent vote to establish a moratorium on new data center applications, effectively pausing development plans in the area.
Compass Datacenters is experiencing further delays in its proposed data center development near Topeka and Shawnee County. On August 4, the Shawnee County Land Use and Development agency announced that Compass's Conditional Use Permit (CUP) application was incomplete.
A spokesperson for Compass Datacenters confirmed they are collaborating with Shawnee County staff to provide the requested additional materials and intend to refile by the August 28 deadline. This incomplete application comes after the Topeka City Council unanimously voted on July 14 to implement a moratorium on accepting new data center applications, temporarily halting projects like Compass's proposed site at SW 85th Street in the Wakarusa area, for which the CUP request was originally submitted on July 24. The moratorium was a response to significant community controversy from both Topeka and Shawnee County residents.
