Gov: Sangamon County Board, Sangamon County Zoning Board
The Sangamon County Board voted 17 to 10 to approve land for a major CyrusOne data center project on Thayer Road in Waverly, about 40 minutes southwest of Springfield. This decision comes after the county's zoning board had unanimously determined the project met zoning requirements in March.
While zoning officials confirmed the project is now moving into its next phase, construction is not imminent. CyrusOne is required to submit detailed site plans and updated documentation from utility providers, including Apple Creek for water and a rural electric co-op for power. Additionally, concerns raised by residents regarding noise will be addressed through pre-construction and post-construction sound studies. Some residents expressed that the approval process felt rushed, though officials denied this, stating efforts were made to allow public comment. Officials anticipate the review process for these detailed plans could take several months.
