Amazon has clarified that a building it recently purchased in Pasadena, California will not be used as a data center, but rather as a research and development facility for its quantum computing work. The facility, previously occupied by Earthlink, was purchased for $78 million and is located within Pasadena's technology and life science corridor. While a group of concerned residents had raised issues about the potential impacts of the building being used as a high-intensity AI data center, Amazon has stated that it is in the early planning stages and committed to working with city officials and the community throughout the development process. The city has confirmed that no formal application has been submitted for the building to be used as a data center.
